Magnetic Tape
Magnetic tape is old technology that is still used as a storage medium for large-volume information. Secondary Storage is using technology Sequential Access Storage Device (SASD). Many organizations are moving from using a reel-to-reel magnetic tape to use mass-storage tape cartridge that can hold more data (more than 35 GB) than the old magnetic tape. But this time the magnetic tape even more rarely used. This cartridge is part of the automation systems that store hundreds of cartridges, select and open it automatically using robotic technology.
Magnetic tape systems are now being used to archive data and to store the necessary data quickly, but not instantly. The advantage of magnetic tape is not too expensive, relatively stable and able to store large amounts of information. Its weakness is the way of storing data in a sequential and relatively slow compared to other secondary storage media. To find records that are stored in the magnetic tape, the tape must be read from beginning to the rekord location is located.
